Help us legalize same-sex civil unions

Hawaii, the state that passed the country's very first "defense of marriage" constitutional amendment over 10 years ago, may be on its way to becoming the fifth state to legalize same-sex civil unions.

This legislation has already passed the state House, but currently its stuck in state Senate Judiciary Committee with members tied 3-3 on whether or not to pass the legislation up for a vote before the full Senate.

Fortunately, according to the AP, "Democratic Senate leaders have said that if the panel became deadlocked, they would yank the measure from its committee and force a vote before the full Senate" and they have the votes to pass it.

But to make that happen, we need to act quickly.

Will you sign our petition urging Democratic Hawaiian state Senate leaders to push the civil union legislation out of committee and up for a vote in front of the full Senate?

Here's what our petition says:
"Democratic Hawaiian state Senate leaders, please push the current legislation dealing with civil unions (HB444 HD1) up for a vote in front of the full Senate because you have the votes to pass it. Pro-equality families here in Hawaii and throughout the country are counting on you and will support you."
Back in 1998, Hawaii was the very first state to pass a constitutional amendment allowing a state to ban same-sex marriages. Just imagine what kind of message it would send equality opponents to make the very same state the fifth in the country to legalize same-sex civil unions.

Democratic leaders in Hawaii's state Senate have the ability to force a vote on civil union legislation and they have the votes they need to send it to the Governor's office, but they need to know the pro-equality movement in Hawaii and throughout the country is behind them.

Sign our petition and help us encourage Democratic Hawaiian state Senate leaders to do the right thing and push their current civil union legislation to a vote in front of the full Senate. Just click the link below:
