I wanted to take a moment to share some exciting news: Advocates for Youth has entered into a new partnership with the 80 Million Strong Campaign for Young American Jobs. Collaborating with and supporting the work of youth activists is central to Advocates' Rights. Respect. Responsibility.® vision - and we are looking forward to continuing this role on the steering committee and as a coalition partner of the 80 Million Strong Campaign.
Named for the 80 million members of the Millennial Generation (those born after 1980) the 80 Million Strong Campaign is focused on uniting young people to form their own progressive public policy solutions to challenges they face as adolescents and young adults. The campaign is a partnership between organizations like Advocates for Youth, with years of experience in youth advocacy, and newer organizations founded and led by young people from the Millennial Generation.
With support from Advocates for Youth, the 80 Million Strong Campaign will hold its inaugural youth policy summit July 14-15, 2009. The summit will bring together young people from around the country to present policy solutions and draft legislation to solve the jobs crisis among young Americans. The current economic crisis has hit young people particularly hard. Youth unemployment is estimated to be nearly nine points higher than the general population, despite the fact that Millennials are among the most active members of their communities, highly skilled, and highly educated. Strong economic opportunity for young adults plays a key role in sexual health, while lack of opportunity can contribute to poor health outcomes for young people.
80 Million Strong is currently raising funds to provide full scholarships to 100 young people to attend the summit in July. I invite you to join me in supporting their efforts. Your donation will help ensure that young people with the most diverse backgrounds, experiences, and brightest ideas can attend the summit, independent of financial obstacles.
