Please join us for an event at Antigone Books, located at 411 North Fourth Avenue, Friday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m., for the following.
Mary Ellen Barnes will discuss her new book, The Road to Mount Lemmon: A Father, A Family, and the Making of Summerhaven (U of A Press, $17.95). This beguiling illustrated memoir of the Catalina Mountains is told by the daughter of one of the pioneers in the life and development of Mount Lemmon’s communities. Barnes’ father resigned from teaching in 1943 to devote his career to the development of this mountain oasis. He sold real estate, bought the village’s tiny two-room store, installed a sawmill to build a larger store, and built the Mount Lemmon Inn. As Barnes spins her father’s personal saga, she also gives readers a glimpse of the Catalinas before Tucson became a boom town, recalling adventures in the wild country, amid the local cowboys, rangers, ranchers and loggers.
The reading will be followed by a question and answer period. Refreshments will be served.
