Last Friday, I sent you an email asking you to sign our petition urging Democratic Hawaiian state Senate leaders to push civil union legislation out of committee and up for a vote in front of the full Senate.

It was a last minute effort and I wasn't sure what the work of pro-equality advocates in Hawaii would mean to all of you across the country, but, so far, a stunning 861 Stonewall Democrats from every corner of the US have signed our petition.

That's an amazing number of signatures for just a single email, but in order to have a real impact on Democratic Leaders in Honolulu we need every single signature possible.

Just to remind you, here's what our petition says:

"Democratic Hawaiian state Senate leaders, please push the current legislation dealing with civil unions (HB444 HD1) up for a vote in front of the full Senate because you have the votes to pass it. Pro-equality families here in Hawaii and throughout the country are counting on you and will support you."

Democratic leaders in Hawaii's state Senate have the ability to force a vote on civil union legislation and they have the votes they need to send it to the Governor's office, but they need to know that Stonewall Democrats and the broader pro-equality movement -- in Hawaii and throughout the country -- is behind them.

With this legislation, we have a chance to fight back against same anti-equality forces that passed the country's very first constitutional amendment "defending marriage" back in 1998. It is not going to be easy, but with your signature we can help others stand tall and send a strong message to our opponents: Equality is coming, no matter what you say.
